So you just unwrapped an AmazonAlexa, Echo, or EchoDot—maybe someone who really gets you gifted one, or perhaps the holidays inspired you to treat yo’ self. Don’t start the new year with the smart speaker still sitting in its box. Setting it up to play classic, pop, and everything else is a done deal in three steps.
What you’ll need: your new device, the Amazon Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet, and your Spotify login info. Here’s how to connect Amazon Alexa to Spotify:
Listen for free on mobile. Play any artist, album, or playlist on shuffle mode Listen for free on tablet. Play any song, any time Spotify Premium features. Play any song, any time on any device-mobile, tablet, or your computer. Download music for offline listening. Enjoy amazing sound quality. No ads – just uninterrupted. Spotify Free users can play their favorite music on even more smart speakers; not only Amazon Echo speakers, but Sonos speakers like the One and Beam – and Bose ones too. Try Amazon Music for free Before, there was no automatic provision for music built into the Echo or Alexa, but you could access Prime Music if you were an Amazon Prime. “Alexa plays Ariane Grande on Spotify”. Alexa’s answer was: “Playing Ariane Grande’s songs through Spotify.” Excellent! So now I have a free 30-day Spotify Premium trial and now it works with my Amazon Echo Dot without a hitch. This is all you need to connect the Spotify music application with Amazon Echo via the Amazon Alexa app. Yes, you can now ask Alexa to play your favorite music, or favorite playlist or favorite podcast through Spotify on echo devices. This Spotify-Alexa integration shall work for both Premium and free tier subscribers in India. The Swedish company claims that customers will be able to summon Alexa in English, Hindi. Whether you are a Spotify Premium subscriber or using the ad-supported free tier, you can stream music and podcasts directly on Amazon Echo devices. Spotify for Alexa will be coming soon for the Amazon Fire TV range for mobile devices. Initially, in 2016, Spotify supported Amazon Echo only for premium subscribers and in select markets only.
Bonus hack: Once Alexa is up and running, you can even listen to another user’s Spotify account. Just ask Alexa to “Spotify Connect,” and the device will search for another one on the same Wi-Fi network. Stealing your holiday houseguests’ excellent playlists is encouraged.

Download the Alexa app, open it, and link your Spotify account with these steps:

Set Spotify as your default service for music and podcasts so you don’t need to specify “on Spotify” at the end of your voice commands to play music:
Note: You still need to say “on Spotify” at the end of commands to play podcasts.
Now just ask Alexa to play something! E.g. 'Alexa, play Discover Weekly'. Check out the Amazon help site for supported languages.
